Business has a bad name for many people. It is easy to point to unethical and damaging behavior by companies. And it may seem straightforward to blame either indivuduals or, more generally, ruthless markets and amoral commercial society. In Honorable Business, James R. Otteson argues that business activity can be valuable in itself. The primary purpose of honorable businesses is to create value-for all parties. They look for mutually voluntary and mutually beneficial transactions, so that all sides of any exchange benefit, leading to increasing prosperity not just for one person or for one group at the expense of others but simultaneously for everyone involved. Done correctly, honorable business is a positive-sum activity that can enable flourishing for individuals and prosperity for society. Otteson connects honorable business with the political, economic, and cultural institutions that contribute to a just and humane society. He builds on Aristotle's conception of human beings as purposive creatures who are capable of constructing a plan for their lives that gives them a chance of achieving the highest good for humanity, focusing on autonomy and accountability, as well as good moral judgment. This good judgment can enable us to answer the why of what we do, not just the how. He also draws on Adam Smith's moral philosophy and political economy, and argues that Smithian institutions have played a significant role in the remarkable increase in worldwide prosperity we have seen over the last two hundred years. Otteson offers a pragmatic Code of Business Ethics, linked to a specific conception of professionalism, and defends this Code on the basis of a moral mandate to use one's limited resources of time, talent, and treasure to provide value for oneself only by simultaneously providing value to others. The result is well-articulated parameters within which business can be an acceptable-perhaps even praiseworthy-activity.

Parenting can be the toughest journey a person ever makes. The author transparently addresses the difficult parts of this role while pointing us to some practical ways of thinking and relating with children to lighten the responsibility. This book is as fascinating as Amy Chuas Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother memoir, as relatable as Jen Hatmakers Christian foibles, as uplifting as Iyanla Vanzants inspirational messages, and backed by solid research of the likes of Brene Brown. By deftly combining four of Americas favorite genres into one enjoyable read, the author does not force us to compare and choose one world view over another, but honors all. Kim understands the unique challenges and opportunities that arise when youre parenting in a culture different than the one in which you were raised. Her words are wise and just what you need to figure out what is best for your family! Jill Savage, author of Better Together: Because Youre Not Meant to Mom Alone This is an insightful book, full of sound and practical advice. I highly reccommend it. Dr. Helen Mendes Love, MSW, author of Reflections on the Upsides of Aging Kim gives invaluable insight on the intricacies of parenting in a more globalized and culturally-relevant world, while respecting tradition and heritage. Sam Louie, M.A., LMHC, author of Asian Shame and Addiction: Suffering in Silence Humorous, yet educational, this book is a must read for any parent. Make it up, dammit! Just lie! How can you expect to become a physician if you don't learn how to lie? I used to recommend to junior medical students the first day they walked into a ward. I shared the wisdom accumulated in more than thirty years. I had survived thanks to a carefully woven web of lies. The mother of all lies holds there is an objective good, such as money, power, or prestige. We are expected to pursue it at the cost of denying ourselves, our unique living truth. This book narrates the journey of Lodovico Balducci in his discovery of the living truth: the ability to give and receive unconditional love. Agape is purposeful, determined, and committed love inspired by our own mystery, the most intimate needs and inspiration. Agape allowed Balducci to convert his worst liabilities, such as depression, into his most valuable assets when ministering to the suffering. Agape showed Balducci that he was sacred, that is, endowed with a mission only he can accomplish, that sacrifice (the recognition of one's sacredness) is the meaning of existence, and that redemption (the paying of somebody else's debt for the common good) is the goal of personal sacrifice.
